Shiatsu Therapy in Belfast
Experience a deeply relaxing bodywork therapy supporting balance, grounding and overall wellbeing.
Shiatsu is a holistic, hands-on therapy that uses gentle pressure, stretches and mindful touch. The word Shiatsu means “finger pressure” in Japanese, although practitioners may also use their palms, thumbs and other techniques during a treatment.
At Belfast Wellness Clinic, Shiatsu treatments are provided by Kathy McKee, one of Northern Ireland’s most experienced Shiatsu practitioners. Each session is adapted to how you feel physically and emotionally on the day.
Our clinic is located on the Ormeau Road, close to Belfast city centre and easily accessible from South Belfast and the surrounding area.
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu originated in Japan and draws upon principles associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine, including Yin and Yang, the Five Elements and the meridian system.
In traditional Eastern approaches, meridians are understood as pathways through which Ki -also known as Chi or Qi - flows around the body. A Shiatsu practitioner uses touch and observation to identify areas that feel tense, depleted or out of balance.
During treatment, pressure, stretches and gentle movement are used to encourage a greater sense of flow and connection throughout the body. The experience can be both physical and deeply relaxing, helping you become more aware of where you may be holding tension.
Each Shiatsu treatment is different because it responds to you rather than following a fixed routine.
Why do people choose Shiatsu?
Modern life can leave us feeling physically tense, mentally overstimulated or disconnected from our bodies. Shiatsu provides an opportunity to pause, slow down and receive attentive, therapeutic touch.
People visit our Shiatsu therapist for support with:
- stress and difficulty switching off
- fatigue or low energy
- muscular tension and stiffness
- physical or emotional overwhelm
- relaxation and restorative rest
- feeling disconnected or ungrounded
- adjusting to periods of change
- developing greater body awareness
- supporting general physical and emotional wellbeing
Some clients come with a particular area of tension they would like Kathy to focus on. Others book Shiatsu because they value the sense of stillness, connection and balance they experience during and after a session.
Shiatsu can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a broader approach to your health and wellbeing.
A treatment tailored to you
Kathy combines light and deeper touch according to your needs, preferences and comfort. Her approach is intuitive and responsive, paying attention to both what you communicate and how your body responds during treatment.
Some parts of the session may feel quiet and still, while others may include gentle stretches or movement. Pressure can be adjusted at any time and should never feel overwhelming.
Kathy’s aim is to create a safe and nurturing environment in which you can settle, reconnect with yourself and experience a greater sense of grounding.
You will experience your treatment as:
- A healing relaxation therapy
- A revitalising and refreshing reset
- A mechanism to resolve physical/emotional/psychological/spiritual issues
- A nurturing health maintenance programme
Or
- A deep and compassionate transformative journey releasing what no longer serves you to create space for renewal
What happens during a Shiatsu session?
Your appointment begins with a conversation about your health, how you have been feeling and what you would like from the session. This helps Kathy understand your needs and identify any areas that may require particular care.
A Shiatsu treatment lasts approximately one hour and takes place fully clothed. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, such as leisurewear or yoga-style garments, that allows you to move easily.
During the treatment, Kathy may use:
- gentle or deeper pressure
- mindful, sustained touch
- stretches and supported movements
- work along the body’s traditional meridian pathways
- periods of quiet rest and stillness
You can ask for the pressure, position or technique to be changed at any time.
At the end of your treatment, Kathy allows time for grounding and integration before you leave. Many people report feeling deeply relaxed, more connected with their bodies or quietly energised afterwards.
Everyone responds differently. You may want to drink some water, avoid rushing and allow yourself time to appreciate the effects of the session.
Is Shiatsu suitable for everyone?
Shiatsu can be adapted for many people, but please tell us about any health conditions, pregnancy, recent surgery, injuries or medication when booking.
Treatment may need to be adapted or postponed if you have a fever, infection, suspected blood clot, recent fracture or another condition requiring medical assessment. Kathy can advise whether approval from your GP or another healthcare professional is recommended.
